Need A Dentist? The Academy of General Dentistry Can Help

CHICAGO (November 4, 2008) With numerous toll-free services designed to assist people in finding a dentist, how can you know which service is right for you? How about visiting a dentist dedicated to staying up-to-date in dentistry by completing 75 hours of continuing education every three years. Maybe you are interested in visiting a dentist who is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management and the overall coordination of oral health needs or even one who can provide preventive services. If these qualifications describe your ideal dentist, then your search can end with the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) toll-free "Find a Dentist" service.

By dialing 1.877.2X.A.YEAR (1.877.292.9327), trained AGD member service representatives can point consumers in the right direction to find a primary and permanent dental care provider. The toll-free service is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the United States or Canada. By providing specific information such as, state, city and zip code, the caller is provided with the names, addresses and phone number of at least three general dentists in their area.

"Tooth decay and gum disease are the biggest risks for adults who don't receive regular dental care, says AGD Spokesperson, Raymond Martin, DDS, MAGD. "The AGD wants to help consumers maintain healthy teeth and gums by providing highly qualified general dentists who can help lessen the threat of oral health problems that can arise."

Consumers also have the option of searching for an AGD dentist by designation. A Fellow of the AGD (FAGD) has earned 500 approved continuing dental education hours, passed a comprehensive 400-question exam and held membership in the AGD for three continuous years. A Master of the AGD (MAGD) has attained Fellowship status and earned an additional 600 approved continuing education hours, meeting requirements in certain dental disciplines, of which 400 hours are hands-on courses. A Master of the AGD has taken a total of 1,100 hours of continuing education and studied 16 disciplines in dentistry.

For nearly ten years, the AGD has connected more than 7,000 consumers with AGD general dentists through this free toll-free service. Consumers can also search for an AGD dentist online by visiting http://www.agd.org/, clicking on "For the Public," and selecting "Find an AGD Dentist." The AGD's Web site provides a listing of members nationwide.

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is a professional association of more than 35,000 general dentists dedicated to staying up-to-date in the profession through continuing education. Founded in 1952, the AGD has grown to become the world's second largest dental association, which is the only association that exclusively represents the needs and interests of general dentists. A general dentist is the primary care provider for patients of all ages and is responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management and overall coordination of services related to patients' oral health needs.
